zoysia zeon sod – tons of weeds
adi – posted 02 July 2011 09:56
Sod is less than 45 days old. It looks pretty thick except for some brown spots.
We see tons of weeds. Some plants, tall grass, crab grass. It is advisable to spray for weeds on this young sod?
If yes, what should we spray it with?

I don’t know about spraying it but I’d definately pull that crab grass out by hand. That stuff can grow one hell of a root ball.

I was at the John Deer landscapes store which sells mostly professional chemicals. He recommended Celsius for zoysia and most warm season grass. It is $85 for a container of powder concentrate to cover about two acres. It is expensive but should last years for a typical lawn. You only mix as much as you need.
The best consumer one is Image for Nutsedge (imazaquin) at Lowes for $20 for a one time hit. John Deer said Celsius is much better though and cheaper in the long run – years.

Image for crabgrass gets it in one shot too.

Yes, Image for Crabgrass will work. The main difference is that it will also not kill fescue or cool season grasses. The Image for Nutsedge is just for warm season grasses.
Image for Crabgrass is sold in a small box with three packets to dilute in a gallon of water. Each packet/gallon does 500 sq ft. It is quite a bit more expensive per square foot to use than the liquid concentrate Image for Nutsedge. Alas, the Image for Crabgrass seems to have been taken off the market. I could only find it on Amazon from an individual seller. It now seems to be sold only a a pro product called Solitare but very expensive – like $150 a bottle.

John Deere Landscape is very close to where we live. I will check out Celsius.
Image sounds pretty good too for crab grass in particular.
I hope to get rid of all the crab grass. I have spent hours pulling them out by hand. There are other grass (tall one with not as much thick root system). Hope JD will give me some suggestions for that as well. I do see some Fescue and may be Bermuda here and there.
Thanks everyone for your wise suggestions.

You might want to take in a sample of the unwanted grass pests to show them. They have a potion for almost all of them, but the bermuda is really the hardest one to control!
Good luck and let us know what you ended up doing!

ooh, he said bermuda :O You’ll never get rid of that crap if you have it!

Went to John Deere yesterday.
They were out of Celsius . Said to come back on Monday.
Anyway learned something while I was there – Sedge is annual – crab grass is annual
They will go away in the frost and if we can use a pre-emergent next year before they come up then, we can save $85 on Celsius.
I’d still like to do Celsius for other weeds. I took pictures of the weeds and the other blue grass. With the picture he was unable to tell what grass that was so, I am planning on changing that small piece of sod with the one that we saved.
For sedge I got Sedge Hammer. He said to just spray on the leaves.

Have you tried baking soda to kill the existing crabgrass? Just sprinkle some regular arm & hammer on the leaves.
I’m not crazy about Image, seems like it works very slowly. I have gotten impatient and tried to use doses above the recommended amount, but then it will stunt your zoysia. Also, don’t apply it when zoysia is greening up.
I like Celsius. Seems like it kills everything except zoysia and bermuda.
The best method to kill crabgrass is to use preemergent herbicide. Yes, it is annual, but if you let it, it will drop seeds every year and keep trying to come back. Walter Reeves says put down the preemergent in Feb. and Sept.

Thanks Ken. John Deere hasn’t got Celsius supply yet. Is there another place where we can get this?I bought image from Lowes and they said the temp. has to be below 83 for it to work. With the weather being as hot as it is, I can’t treat the grass with image.
Baking soda technique seems like a good idea. I will certainly try that.
Is there any other place where I can get a hold of Celsius?Crab Grass is taking over our Zeon.
PS: Just called John Deere. They have the supply (both Apex and Raleigh). Will be picking it up today.
JD said it is ok to treat the grass early morning or late evening.
How long does it take for these weeds and crab grass to die? Any idea?

I don’t know where else to get Celsius, I got mine at JD also.
The baking soda is supposed to kill crabgrass in 24 hours. I think the Celsius takes about a week.
I like regular weed-b-gone for most weeds. They will start wilting in a couple of hours. It’s best to spray in the morning. Weed-b-gone won’t do anything for crabgrass, though.
