zoysia recovery

I am in Marietta, GA, just north of Atlanta. I had my back yard sodded with Meyer Zoysia in 2004. By this year, a shady area had almost completely thinned out. A month or so ago, I had several trees removed, now the area gets at least 5 hours of direct sun. Some of the problem area is bare dirt, which I plan to plug with Jamur. Another part has a thin distribution of zoysia sprouts. (Maybe one blade of grass every six inches.) I want to see if the thin areas will recover. It has started to recover slowly over the past month. Due to last year’s drought, I am only allowed to hand water for 25 minutes every other day with a regular garden hose.

What can I do to help the thin areas fill in? Should I let it grow as high as it wants, or will mowing encourage faster lateral growth?

Hey Ken,

This study says that unmown zoysia will spread fastest.
