Winter Dormancy

Ok, its almost that time of the year where the zoysia does its annual hay field impression. My question is does anyone have any advice for watering frequency and times during the brown months? Last year was my first with Zoysia and I can’t remember how much I water. I know that you are supposed to water before any hard freezes, but other than that I’m not sure. Any advice would be appreciated.

Once it turns to straw stop watering. Remember the rule with Zoysia, only water when it asks for it by rolling it’s blades.

I think you would be well served by reading about winter care of zoysia on some of the College websites that have turf programs (NC State, Clemson, University of Florida, LSU, etc). Zoysia does need water even in the winter after turning dormant. The top is brown, but the roots are “alive and well”
