Warm Season Grasses

Has anyone in the Atalant, GA area successfully used either of two new lawngrasses, Tech Turf or Shawow Turf, developed at Texas Tech?

If so, please let me hear of your experiences.

I read about the grasses at www.turffalo.com and the Shadow Turf, developed from zoysia, interests me.

I have no information about the performance of these two grasses in Georgia, but they have been extensively marketed in west Texas. The company that is pushing these “new” turfgrass products is out of Lubbock, TX. Turffalo is nothing more than common buffalograss, and ShadowTurf is a Zoysia Japonica species.

Although there is no independent university research confirming the reputed attributes of these products, I have been told by one very experienced extension agent that has experience with these Texas Tech grasses: “there are no significant advantages using these grasses over what is already on the market”.

In Georgia, I also question if buffalograss is a best choice for turfgrass. Buffalograss is best suited for full sun, arid or semiarid climates, such as the Great Plains or high desert regions with limited irrigation and/or rainfall – not for the humid, rainy, southeast USA.

I would encourage you to check out the latest NTEP (National Turfgrass Evaluation Program) results for the best Bermudagrass, Zoysia, or St Augustine in your area before deciding to invest your money in an unproven and untested product.

Just my two-cents worth and hope this helps…
