Types of Fescue

I am currently looking into laying sod in an area that should hopefully get 4-5 hours of sun per day once I get all the trees knocked down. I’ve got two choices from my local sod farmer here in Ohio, Turf Type Tall Fescue and Fine Leaf Fescue/ Bluegrass Sod. Which do you think would hold up best in the part sun, part shade environment, along with an active dog? Please help. Thanks,

i would go with the fine fescue due to your lower temps than the rest of the transition zone. i would seed it- cheaper to install and you can always come back and reseed with your active dog. remember, sod is grown from seed….

My only problem is that is my entire yard. If I seed it, don’t I have to keep the dog off of it for a couple months? I was under the impression that I would only have to keep him off of it for a couple weeks if I used sod as opposed to seed. What do you think?

no, if you wait until the seed has matured, then the dog should be ok. same goes for the sod- you can damage it too if used too early. the key is in the management, the water fertilizing and mowing.

I appreciate the help, Ted, but just two more questions. How long do you think it will take for the seed to mature? And can you give me a good guide as far as water and fertilizing so that it can mature well?thanks,

well, in your market, probably around 2-3 weeks to germinate, then maybe 1 month to establish well. you would want to wait until fall if possible, but you could do it in the spring if an emergency dictates.you’ll need day temps in the mid to high 70’s during the germination phase. water 2-3 times per day lightly, and use a starter type fertilizer. i usually find when homeowners are fighting their lawns like this it’s usually a landscape design type of issue- usually grass in the wrong place, etc. try rethinking the area if it’s not working. p.s. -it’s not a dog issue! -it’s a design issue….

I really appreciate the help, Ted. I’ll give her a shot and see what happens.
Thanks!
