Trouble w/St Augustine sodded by builder

Hello, I just found this board today.
We bought our house a year ago. 1/2 acre lot, not very level.
The builder sodded with St Augusting (yup, here in Texas with hardly any trees. Wish he had my water bill). We have a sprinkler system.
Anyway, the workers didn’t bother to smooth out the ground before laying sod. They just threw it down all over the place. I dug up an area for a flower bed last month and found rocks, pieces of metal, etc, right under the grass!
As you can imagine, the grass isn’t level, there are all kinds of pits and valleys. Looks horrible. We can’t afford to rip it up, can you think of anything we can do to even it out? You could twist an ankle walking along the yard, some areas the grass is lush and high, then you step in a hole.
Sorry this is long and thanks for any advice.

spread 1/2″ of sand over low spots. Rake into grass. Finally, water the sand to further help work the sand into the soil. Wait a month or so to allow the grass to grow through the sand. Repeat as necessary.

Steve, thank you for your reply. And I’m relieved to know I don’t have to start all over with the grass.
Thanks again.
