I live in California and am in an argument with my fiance. I am trying to put grass in the yard and she only wants “Texas Grass”. I have told her that i can noty find anything called “Texas Grass”. She keeps telling me they have it becuase she had it in her yard and you can buy it in sod but can not get it in seed. Is there such a thing called “texas grass” or is that a name some one gave it here since it grows goo din texas. any help would be great

I’ve been fooling around with turfgrass in Texas for over 30 years and have never heard of “Texas Grass”. However, from the description you gave, it is probably St Augustine. St Augustine is also commonly called “carpet grass” in Texas, although that name is erroneous. St Augustine is also only available in sod at this time, as no St Augustine seed exists.

Hope this helps you win the argument!

I just thought of something:

There is a variety of St Augustine that used to marketed and known as “Texas Common St Augustine”. Texas Common SA was primarily sold in Texas more than 20 years ago and before the marketing of other varieties of St Augustine, such as “Raleigh” and “Palmetto”.

You might be able to find a few growers that still sell Texas Common SA by doing a web search. Texas Common SA is a great turfgrass, but it is somewhat susceptible to the lethal Panicum Mosaic Virus – a.k.a., St Augustine Decline Virus. However, SAD virus infection may not be an issue in California.
