Where are you located? What types of turf were you thinking of? Do you have Irrigation? Too many questions……I have heard that painting roundup on a freshly cut stump will kill the roots. Not on the label so I have never tried it.
Good Luck

im in miami florida the yard has sprinklers but i dont know if the house has a pump. i want to put in the bermuda grass and i also talked to a guy at home depot and he says the only way to get rid of the sugar sand is to dig it out and put down new soil. what i can see though i see grass plantings under the weeds that were covering. maybe i need the yard sprayed when i first move in to get things in perspective.

Spraying to see what you have is a great idea. You would be amazed how much turf people have under thier weeds… I have never heard of sugar sand but I assume that sand is sand(granule size determines sand vs. silt vs.clay.). The sands shape means more than anything(angular, sub angular, round,etc.). Adding organic matter will improve the sand water and nutrient holding capacity. Remember: sand leaches nutrients. Hence, more applications of lighter doses of fertilizer will be more friendly to your lawn. Same for water. On the bright side I feel that sand is the best growing medium. Provided you learn how to manage fertility, water, drainage, ect.
Soil test to see what you have nutrient wise and tailor your fertility program around the results.
Good Luck…Hope I have helped…
