steps to rescue lawn

In May, we put sod grass (unknown type) in our shady backyard which died two months later. I’d like to try putting shade grass seeds in before abandoning grass altogether. Will seeds grow in the dead sod? Do I need to remove the sod squares? Is there any chance at all the sod grass will come to life next spring?

I need so much more information..
Where do you live? What will the area be used for?Has anything ever grown in that area or is it too shady?
I’d say there is very little chance the sod will respond in the spring since it already died once.
