St. Augustine Replant Now

I am going to be removing a part of my square lawn to create an island planter so to speak. My square lawn is St. Augustine, originally planted in sods around Mar/Apr. Well, my sidewalk is just hard flat dirt and i was planning on sodding next spring. But I dont want to throw away the St. Augustine that I’m removing, figured I could re-use it on the sidewalk. I know this would work well in Spring, but the obvious quesion is, can I do this now? I will re-till the sidewalk to soften it up, and add an inch or so of topsoil. Am I wasting my time or will it root and stay dormant?

by the way, I am in Southern California in Zone 9.
