st. augustine in sand

I sodded st. augustine del mar 2 years ago.South of San Antonio tx. I am in sand under oaks with partial sun.Cannot get grass to thicken up.Grass is very then.Any tips on what I should do?

LIME LIME …. SOIL PROBABLY VERY ACIDIC AND ST. WONT’ GROW. UNABLE TO TAKE UP FERTILIZER. NUTRIENTS ARE LOCKED UP !!!!APPLY AT LEAST 20# DOLOMIDIC LIME TO EACH 1000 SQ FT ASAP- DONT EXPECT RESULTS FAST HOWEVER IT WORKS!!!!!

Your sand it hard to keep moist and St Augustine demands moist roots. You will need to keep it moist enough to prevent the blades from folding together and the color from turning bluish. If you see any (ANY) dry spots anywhere (ANYWHERE) on your lawn, water the whole thing for at least an hour.

Also set your mower to the highest setting. That will help shade the soil to keep it from warming and drying out. Taller grass feeds the roots to a deeper level.

St Augustine loves to grow in sand so you have perfect SA soil as is. In order of importance you need to water, mow, and fertilize.
