Sod Grown on Plastic

I own a sod farm and am interested in growing a small plot of tifeagle (9ac) on plastic as a test. I hear that this is being done now but I have not found any reference material. Any info appreciated.

ANON, I have some old publications, but they’re not on the web. Biggest problem in growing grass on plastic is water management. Light and frequent. If you can get thin plastic that punctures easily, it will drain. You will need a very thin layer of compost or other finely divided organic material in which to grow your sprigs. Make sure that you also develop a clean, single-sprig source material, to reduce the confusion of contamination.

Thanks, From what I have learned from various sources – it seems that this won’t make economic sense for Tifeagle. Most clients want sprigs and we can’t cut sprigs without cutting the plastic into small shreds as well. I think we’ll locate a small pivot on one of the more sandy areas on our farm and go from there.
