Shady yard in Orlando FL

We live in Orlando Florida, warm and sunny. Except, in our back yard we have a very large, old camphor tree. This shades the back yard effectively, but keeps typical Florida grasses from growing. We are looking for a plant that will grow here in the shade of this tree so that our back yard is not just dirt, or we have to give up and mulch the yard and install stepping stones everywhere.Any suggestions you have are greatly appreciated.
