Scalping Tiff 419 Yard

My wife and I recently purchased a home with a a Tiff419 yard. The homeowner would cut the lawn at or above 3″, which leaves 2.5 inches of thatch and 1 inch of green on each grass blade. It is to late to scalp the lawn..?
I am hoping to get the lawn down to a cutting level suitable for a power reel.

Spring and late summer (early fall in some areas) are the two best times to scalp bermuda. Take it all the way down to the dirt if you want, because bermuda has an extensive network of rhizomes below the surface, which produce new plants when the top growth is removed. Make sure to fertilize at full rate after the scalping, which will help the turf recover quickly. Any name brand lawn food will do.

Is it safe to take new sod down to 1/2″ on the first mowing? I have Tiff 419.
