Rye Grass Growing Over St. Augustine

HELP. I live in Dallas and planted the first of two rye grass seedings about three weeks ago. The first seeding included fertilizer. At this point I have some areas that have taken well and others that haven’t. It looks to me like the problem is that the seeds can’t get through the St Augustine to dirt. Any tips?
