Reel Mowers and Topdressing…

Howdy folks,
First off, I would like to thank all of you for this excellent resource. 🙂
To give you a little background, I bought my house two and a half years ago and have done a LOT of work on the yard. I spend every night after work and all weekend outside during the summer. I’ve made wonderful progress and the neighbors stop by regularly with compliments. :-)))
On to the questions:
1. I really REALLY need some kind of riding mower. My 21″ walk behind is killing me. I’ve got bermudagrass, so I was thinking about a reel mower and when I came across http://www.4apromow.com I thought that this kind of pull behind gang reel mower would do the trick. Does anyone have any experience with Pro Mow, and would a five blade reel give me a nice smooth cut?
2. The sprinkler system has done the trick on bringing my bermuda back to life. The entire lawn has filled in after a summer of watering, but the yard is still rather bumpy. I want to smooth out the ground with sand, but there are some areas that need to be raised by about 3″. Is this too much to build up with sand? Should I topdress gradually with topsoil and only add sand at the top to smooth out those areas?
Thanks in advance for the input. By the way, I am on the south side of Atlanta. 🙂
Andrew

Andrew,
Can’t help out with the Pro Mow – no experience.
However, don’t add too much topdressing – you’ll just choke it out. Best bet is to add a quarter inch at a time while letting grass grow in between topdressings. You’ll have to be patient to bring it up 3″.

Thanks for the reply Scott. I appreciate it. 🙂
Since I posted this message I have spoken with someone who has a Pro Mow gang reel and he says it works very well. He is quite happy with it, so I guess I will give it a try.

VooMan,
Did you get the ProMow and does it work?

Andrew –
don’t know abou the gang mower, but it’s been my understanding that top dressing/soil can be added 1/4″ at a time and brushed into the grass to keep from smothering every 5-6 weeks or so, or peeling back the turf and adding soil underneath the turf to raise it.
I’m sure someone else will elaborate.
Update:
LOL!!!! Just noticed the date. Boy, I’m on top of things today.
Jim.
