question about laying sod
gamom – posted 18 January 2005 06:48
We have just fenced off a small area in our yard for our dogs. It is mostly shade, but does get some sun. We need a fescue sod that will be fine with these conditions. Can anyone tell me what kind of fescue would be best? Also, when would be the best time to put the sod down? We are in Georgia and although we have had a very warm January, it is VERY cold right now. This morning we were in the teens. I have tried to do some research on this issue, but can’t seem to find what I am looking for. Thanks for your help.

Tall in the fall. Tall fescue in autumn, in other words. Seeding in the spring is tough because it competes for weeds, then has to deal with the hot summer.

Dogs and fesque go together about as well as gasoline and fescue. Be prepared to have it look good for just a fue months at the most. Not only will their digestive system hurt it, but the travel will as well. What about zoysia for the shade/durability?

If you don’t mind maintenance and brown lawn in the winter, go with bermuda, although zoysia is grown quite extensively in that region, also.
