preping yard for grass

I live in an area where the dirt is very compact and bad soil. I want to prep my backyard to put in a lawn. I also have a dog so can anyone tell me what kind prep, grass/seed I should consider for both the grass type and what’s best when having a dog?

Where do you live? What kind of grass are you considering? How much area will your lawn cover? Is any of it shaded? Do you have an irrigation system?
