Please help with thinning centipede

We had an early green up this year in central Alabama. We have also had a lot of thunderstorms and rain. Areas of my small yard look thin and there seems to be a lot of grass that did not green up and is dead. What could be causing this? I plan to fertilize (I only do it once a year for centipede and use 18-0-18 fertilizer).

Looks like excessive thatch (clippings). I know very little about centipede though.
