A golf course superintendant told me that he has yet to find anything that works fantastic. His suggestion: Put on rubber gloves. Dip your fingers in Roundup. Pull the nutgrass at the root. The Roundup will attempt to kill the nuts/seeds. It will also leave a yellow spot on your lawn (which will correct itself in a short amount of time). Do this until you no longer have a nutgrass problem.

Several postemergence herbicides will selectively kill sedges (often called nutgrass) in lawns of most turfgrass species including bermudagrass. Products include Sedgehammer, Image, Certainty, Dismiss, Dismiss South (this one not for St. Augustinegrass), and Basagran which is the same active ingredient as Lescogran (only for bunch sedges, not suitable against green kyllinga or purple nutsedge). The one which is most often available in the retail market is Image in a convenient hand-held spray bottle. I prefer Sedgehammer.

Image is very slow acting and I have not personally had great results with it. Get the sedgehammer if available – you will be happier I think.

I have spent the past seven years as a golf course superintendent and my tees were bermudagrass.

Though it wasn’t a big problem, I would sometimes get nutsedge (nutgrass) in the bermuda.

The line of products such as ProSedge, Sedge Hammer, Manage, etc will take care of your nutsedge issues without harming the bermudagrass, or any other desired turf.
