Next Step Regarding Tif

OK so I just bought a house and the tif was 3-4 inches tall. I mowed it down to around 2 inches with rotary mower (thats the lowest it would let me go without dying…ended up filling 15 big trash bags of grass). Yesterday I mowed it to an inch and a half with a reel mower. I put some fertilizer on there that was recommended to me for a lawn care place. I also have a soil sample being anaylized. The grass is now mostly brown with a little green.
Is there any hope in getting it looking nice this season? Should I gradually cut it down lower? I’m new to lawn care and any advice would be appreciated.
