New Sod and weeds

I put down new St.Sugustine Floratam sod 3 weeks ago.The sod is doing fine but so are the new weeds!When would it be safe to use a product like Scotts Super Bonus S to control this problem?

Not for 30-90 days it wouldnt.

About all you can do with such a new yard (until the roots get established) is to get on your hands and knees and pull the weeds out.

Yeah, I also think it’s a little too hot to be putting out Bonus S this time of year.

I am pretty sure there is a schedule somewhere on the bag.

DON”T PULL THOSE WEEDS! If you start pulling weeds before your sod establishes a strong root system, you are likely to hurt the sod. Let the weeds grow with the grass until the root system is strong. Keep your lawn cut and when everything is stable, then pull the weeds or use chemicals.

Funny, I have never hurt my sod when pulling weeds. But then again, I dont Gorilla pull them either.

Some of the broad leafed weeds will need to be dealt with before one or two things occur with it:

1. The weeds get big enough and thick enough to grow on top of your sod (thereby killing the grass—i.e., what Crab Grass does)

3. Seeding. Most of the weeds I have encountered seed fairly rapidly in the Summer Florida heat. There is no way I am going to allow any weeds in my yard to seed when I can easily pull them out.
