New Floratam Plugs and Crabgrass
cboothe – posted 13 October 2002 17:23
I used Roundup to eradicate a major infestation of crabgrass. The crabgrass died and I have since planted Floratam plugs which are growing nicely. The problem is I am starting to see crabgrass sprouts coming back. I have been pulling them, but it is very time consuming. Can I put down a preemergent without damaging the plugs? The instructions from Scotts (their premergent for crabgrass) say not until the fourth mowing on sprigs. The oldest plugs are only 3 weeks old. As I said, they are growing nicely (starting to see a few runners). What should I do?

Well, my suggestion is (if you dont know a reliable sod farmer who will give you that secret stuff they use to kill crabgrass in St. Augustine) is to diligently pull the crabgrass before it seeds out.
Luckily in your case winter is coming and that should “slow” the crabgrass.
Unless our trusty seed knows anything better, I dont think there is a product out there labeled for home use that controls crabgrass without injury to St. Augustine.

that “secret stuff” is simply Asulox, which was up to just recently available only to pros (spray companies) and nursery/agricltural uses. Now It is only available (legally) to nurseries and agriculture establishments.

you can, however, burn it out by the use of either baking soda or oxi-clean. sprinkle it by the handfuls onto the crabgrass and water it in. these products (in my tests, anyway) wont harm the st augustine one bit. it doesnt kill crabgrass systemically, so it will have to be re-treated a few times with this method to totally eradicate the root structure.

Thanks for the suggestions! I already have a big tub of oxyclean, so I’ll give that a try. I was able to carefully spray roundup on the new crabgrass without hitting the plugs this past weekend. But I know I’ll be pushing my luck if I try that again. BTW, does anyone have any suggestions for eradicating dollar weed?

Yep, dollar weeds was easy. I used Atrazine, sand, and less water. Worked great, and have had no reoccurance.

I have managed to get Asulox form a Do it yourself Pest control place that sells comercial pesticides to the consumer. Try there. It isn’t cheap but goes a long way.
