New Empire Zoysia and need Help Pasco,FL

I just resodded 2 weeks today. I used RoundUp to kill all the weeds and crabgrass. I thought I killed everything and it appears i have nut sedge. I bought Bayer all in one weed ocntrol and Ortho nutsedge killer. I am wondering when do i mow the sod as it is growing fast believe it or not. Also I am scared of scalping areas when I mow since I have some uneven spots.
When do i need to fertilize and when do I mow this new sod?
Thanks in advance,Luis

I would mow at 3 inches since it’s a new grass. Also don’t feed it with a lot of Nitrogen for the first two months so that it can keep on developing roots. Alfalfa or corn meal would be safe to apply.

make sure you keep it watered good. also I wouldn’t worry about the wedge as you will never fully get rid of it, and as the pieces of sod fill in together it will choke out most of the sedge.
its good to see more folks in the Tampa area moving to the zoysia. I have people stop by all the time and ask about it, etc.
fwiw I keep my zoysia cut at 3″ as it is more maintainable. it doesn’t look as clean, but it doesn’t need cut as much or require nearly as much water once established.
who are you using for fertilizer? if you are looking one of my neighbors owns an organic company and is reasonably priced and knowledgible w/ zoysia.

I got my sprinklers sawpped out to Rain Bird 5000’s and it is the 16th and i am already at 30,000 gallons.. holly toledo that is alot of water. I just did calculations and am putting 670 gallons of water everytime they come on. I had them on for 2 times a day for the first 30 days at 27 minutes a zone.

I am finding some brown dead looking spots sporadically on my lawn. It was looking awesome and now see these spots.

Just interested to know what you found out about the brown spots. My lawn is about 3 months old now, and had been looking awesome. We have not had all that much rain here in NE Florida, and I have some severely dry spots. I am trying to figure out if the grass will come back in those areas or I I am just screwed.

We had not had any rain for 20+ days with record-breaking high temperature (107F). some area of my Emerald zoysia turned into winter color since I don’t water it. So I mixed in some compost in the dry area to add some insulation. It is working. With the help of rains for the past few days, there are more and more green spots in the brown area.
Elew – posted 23 July 2012 14:39
S the brown spots should come back, right? Should I put the compost down, or will it come back just by watering it more?
ezf – posted 23 July 2012 20:47
Putting compost down on dry spots is a quick fix. Otherwise I would have to investigate what’s underneath. There could be rocks or construction waste etc.

Nothing but sand underneath, which may be part of the reason it is so dry.

I would find some high quality compost and topsoil and mix it together and put some down in those spots. If you wait a month or so it should start to fill in.
