The Texas drought has finally killed off large sections of my St.Augustine…Glad to get rid of it…Searching for a drought tolerant, seed based grass to replace it. Going to start with my backyard which is partially shaded…Buffalo or Zoysia Grass? What does everyone think?

I would suggest amazoy grass. It is the original Zoysia grass released by the Dept of Agriculture back in the 1930’s.

Certainly zoysiagrass and buffalograss should be considered, and so should bermudagrass. There are strengths and weaknesses of each, and none may necessarily give you as much drought resistance as you need. ‘Amazoy’ is equivalent to ‘Meyer’ and the experimental number Z-52. It is clonal.

I don’t think there is any type of grass that is drought tolerant enough to get through what happened in Texas this year. Zoysia is drought tolerant, but it definately still requires the same amount of water as any other grass. If it doesn’t get enough water it will begin to go dormant which isn’t pretty to look at. The only really almost completely drought resistant grass is Bahia but it is not a very good looking grass and it is very thin. As long as you have an irrigation system I would go with zoysia if you can.
