Need help with resod questions

I live in Central Florida and currently have a small Bahia lawn. We would like to resod with St. Augustine but are a bit confused as to the actual process. Do we have to kill off the Bahia first? (One lawn company implied that all that would have to be done is put a layer of top soil over the current lawn and lay the St. Augustine on that). Is the best way to do that with Roundup, and if we do, how long do we need to wait after applying it to lay the new sod? As you can see, I am pretty green (no pun intended) about this subject, so any help on the necessary steps would be appreciated!
