Need help in Atlanta

Small side yard area on an incline with a lot of shade from trees. Bermuda sod originally planted is mostly non-existant now. Need some ideas on what type of grass to plant. Soil needs amending with lime, sand and organic matter as this is red clay country. What about sprigging with centipede? Too much shade for Bermuda and probably zoysia too. Don’t care for fescue, but will use it if recommended. Thanks!

tall fescue will do better in the shade. definitely soil test your lawn before going thru all of the soil amendment work.

I agree w/the post regarding fescue – one other alternative (check locally to determine viability regarding cold tolerance in your area) one of the shade tolerant St. Augustine varieties – seville or palmetto. Centipede is no more shade tolerant in my area (SE Coastal GA) than zoysia. Better than bermuda, but nowhere near as good as the St. Augustine varieties mentioned above.

Zoysia will probably work but you will need to completely sod the area. Zosyia speads extremely slowly in shade but does generally stay where placed.
