C’mon people…I’m not getting any answers here…what type of grass should I plant in my backyard?
Anybody ever sodded Empire or Zorro Zoysia? If so, does it grow well in partial shade?? Will it handle dog traffic???
Don’t make me get tough and plant the wrong type of grass in my backyard! I’ll do it if you make me!!!

I’ve got Empire and really like it. My yard is mostly full sun though. In the spots where I have partial shade it is noticeably thinner. I don’t have any animals, but it is a very dense grass. I would imagine it should hold up pretty well compared to most grasses.

Go with the zorro. It greens faster, has better color, has better shade tolerance, and overal appears to be a tad better grass. Here is a website with some comparison data: http://agfacts.tamu.edu/D8/Williams/AG/landscapedemos/Turfgrassvarietytrial/2003TurfgrassVarietyTrial.pdf
Now remember, zoysia is a thick grass. Therefore the dog droppings will likely remain on top and you may have to pick them up vice letting them decompose naturally. Part of the reason is they sit atop the grass and get dryer and moisture tends to improve decomposition.
Hope this helps your decision.
