mowing height issues

Central NC location, healthy bermuda lawn. As the lawn starts growing out I gradually raise mowing height during the warm season to keep a nice green ‘carpet’ look, but as the season and height progresses, browning catches up by early August. Does it make sense to reset by dropping the height back down, have it look bad for a week or two, and let it grow back out again gradually? How low should I go?
