laying new st. augustine sod

My lawn was severely damaged by chinch bugs and now I need to replace it all with new sod. I was wondering if it was necessary for me to remove the old sod because this is extremely expensive. Can I just kill the old grass and till it then place the new sod on top.

If you kill the old and till it under (or severely scrape the surface) then you should be okay. Some say you can just put it down atop the old but I don’t like that approach.
Best of luck to you.
