how easy is it to kill a bleeding heart?

I have a bleeding heart that I needed to thin out really bad because it did not bloom well last year so someone told me to thin the roots. However when I pulled it up I am afraid I may have killed it and it was my husbands grandmothers and everyone wanted a piece to grow in their yard. any information you can provide is helpful. Thank You!
