How do I know what kind of grass I have?

I have a house in the Detroit area, and I have no idea what kind of grass I have in my yard. All I know is it looks awful…grows in clumps and there are more weeds than grass. In fact, it looks like there might be more than one type of grass out there. I’d like to try and repair the lawn, but don’t know where to start since I don’t know what kind of grass it is. Is there a way to tell?
