I had my back lawn re-sodded with Emerald Zoysia approx. 3 months ago. I have about 4dozen+ pieces of sod that seem to be totally covered in some sort of grass or weed. It is sort of a lime-green’ish color right now, quite a bit lighter than most of the pieces of zoysia sod. The Zoysia *appears to be* growing fine close to the turf of most of the affected pieces, but I cant tell for sure. Can anyone help me identify what this weed/grass is?

Here is a picture of one of the pieces of sod: http://users.adelphia.net/~patnalli/grassweed.jpg

Here is a picture of a single plucked grass/weed: http://users.adelphia.net/~patnalli/onepiece.jpg

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve been told that Zoysia will choke out any weed (I just soddeed by backyard). I’m not sure if weed killers will harm zoysia.

Zoysia is very tolerant of most herbicides. I am unsure what weed you have but you can use any of the following safely on zoysia:2,4-D; Image; MSMA/DSMA; or atrazine. One of those should take care of your problem.

Good luck!

I have a 1 year old empire Zoysia lawn in west central Fl. It looks great and chokes out most weeds except for 1. Dreaded Torpedo grass. I cut my lawn at about 1.5 inches and at first it was hard to tell that I had the torpedo in a few spots. It looks kind of similar to Empire except the blades are just a little wider and more of a blueish color. I had done some research and found a new herbicide Drive 75 by BASF. Should get rid of the few spots I have. I have not applied it yet.
