help with lawn after hurricane ivan

We’ve survived Hurricane Ivan here in Pensacola (close to Alabama), but our lawn is in great need of help. Large areas that were beds under trees will now be grass due to loss of trees. Lots of damage from bulldozer that removed large trees and stumps. Lots of dead grass from debris that was piled on grass for several weeks before crews could pick up. Where do we start? Suggestions have been using a load of sand to level and then plant winter rye (not rye grass) until we can reseed or sod next spring. Are we better off bringing in topsoil to level the areas that have lost a lot of dirt or will sand do. What about laying centipede sod now even though our season is almost over? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

If I had the problem, and I do—I’m just a little east of you in Niceville. My view is fill with sand (or real live soil if that’s what your yard is; overseed with winter rye and hold off until spring on sod.

How is your recovery going. Did you sod or over seed? I just got the downed trees out of the back yard this week and have begun to rebuild?
