I recently had my lawn re-topsoiled and seeded after putting an addition on my house. The grass that was put down (conservation mix??) has come up for the most part, but it is still spotty in some areas. I have a daycare in my home and my lawn gets LOTS of use. I have a huge white pine tree and an oak tree in the back. The yard gets a fair amount of sun and shade. What seed should I buy to re-seed the patchy parts? I want something that is seriously hardy, and hopefully grows quickly. Thanks for the advice!

By the way, I live in Vermont so it gets quite cold and snowy in the winter and pretty warm and dry in the summer. Thanks!

Wow, you really want it all. Just kidding. your only real choices are fescues, and perennial ryegrass. The shade issues would point you in the direction of fine fescues. I would recommend the ryegrass, because it comes up very quickly, can be overseeded during the season and has very good wear tolerance. I think you may be too shady for a healthy stand of bluegrass. Maybe the thing to do is to mix the fine fecue with the Per rye. Make sure you use PERENNIAL rye and not the annual rye.

Good luck with the lawn…. and the Kiddies
