well here is my dillema….i live in central illinois and my back yard just is not what i really want….it is full shade for about 2 thirds of the lawn the other third is mostly shade. i have two very active outside dogs that run a lot in the yard and we are also a very active family in our back yard…(we pretty much live in our back yard in the summer.) i need a grass that will hold up to sun and shade very high traffic. i want somrthing that is very hardy with a long green season…any answers
thanks all

I’d suggest a 50/50 mixture of Kentucky Bluegrass and Fine Fescue in the shade and a Bluegrass/Perennial Ryegrass mixture in the sun. here is a link that talks about shade problems and lists some cultivars of fine fescue that work well in illinos. I suggest the bluegrass/ryegrass mixture in the sun so that you have quick germination with the ryegrass and then the bluegrass should take over and give you a nice stand of turf that is traffic tolerant.
