Grass is dying

I recently purchased a new home and the previous owners discontinued care of the lawn once they knew they were not going to be living in the house the rest of the summer. As a result, the lawn has not been mowed in a month and has not been watered in almost that long. Most of the front yard is turning brown as it gets full sun and the back yard is patchy. Will watering now bring this back out or will it have to be re-sodded? Will it hurt to mow the grass in its current dry state?
