I’m planning on sodding 8000 ft of Emerald Zoysia because I grew up with this grass and loved it but I’ve been told I should consider Zeon. I like the fine-bladed Emerald and the thick turf. Zeon supposedly produces less thatch and spreads easier. Are these both true? Is Zeon as fine-bladed as Emerald? I can get Emerald for ~$150/450sq ft roll; not sure about Zeon. Thanks much!

hi, Where do you live? I live in Austin Texas and been trying to find Emerald Zoysia. You cannot beat the price either. How is the barefoot test on Emerald Zoysia? Thanks.

My brother-in-law has emerald in his front yard and put zeon in his back. He swears by the zeon if that is any help. I like both.

I just installed about 3600 sqr ft of Emerald in Austin. I got it from www.grass4sale.com for $169 which was between $20 – $30 a pallet less than everyone else I spoke to. It looked really nice when it was first installed & I will post an update on the progress this weekend.

Sorry for the delay. I live in the Atlanta, GA area. In terms of barefoot test, I really like Emerald-nice and soft. I’m going to go for the Emerald. Wish I had time to check the Zeon out but couldn’t get enough info to change my mind when I haven’t even seen it. Thanks for the input. I also have had differing input as to whether to fertilize and lime before the sod goes down. One person says use 10-10-10 and another lime and another says to not fertilize until the sod is down.

Hi Fellow Austinite,

I too would like to install zoysia but am having a hard time getting it. I’ve been dealing with TurfAmerica (W. 290 location) and they haven’t been able to get the Emerald lately because of rain and slow growth of the variety. I’m thinking of choosing the Zorro variety instead which they said they can get readily. Keep us posted with your Zoysia project.

Good luck,Jack

Hi Rpankhurst,

I too live in Austin, TX and have been trying to get Emerald Zoysia, but it’s not going to happen anytime soon since no one can get it. I might have to choose the Zorro variety instead. I’ve been dealing with Turf America (W.290 in Oak Hill) and they’re quoting me $170.00 per pallet. They can get the Zorro in a matter of days. Keep us posted on your Zoysia results. I’d love to heard how it does here in Austin. By the way, did you do any special soil prep work before laying the sod? Just wondering…

Good luck,Jack (South Austin

I don’t know if this is true but I read in another post that Zeon Zoysia only requires 4hrs of sunlight a day.

I live in north Atlanta. My yard is very shadey. I am sodding my entire backyard. I decided on Zeon zoysia since I read it was the most shade tolerent. My landscaper put down Empire when I was out of town. He is trying to convince me that he is giving me a better variety for the conditions in my yard. Is he being honest? He will replace with Zeon if I insist. Anyone have any knowlege of which is best?

I have three small test patches of Empire, Jamur and Zeon. I put them in last August and they in the dappled shade of a large Sycamore tree. I will report late in the summer on how they are doing. Please don’t forget to come back and report on your findings!

My neighbor has Empire. She says it grows into her flower beds and she has to spend hours pulling them back.

We ended up with El Toro and the landscaper replaced it to Zeon as I insisted. We just love Zeon. It is supposed to be better than Empire, Emerald and based on my research the best zoysia if you like lush thick lovely green lawn.

I’d say go with Zeon.
