dead or injured?

I had some zoysia Z-3 planted in large plugs almost sod pieces in an area on the side of my house. Didn’t seem like it was doing well, so I pulled it up. The ground under it was damp and compacted. (guess I did a bad job) The grass pieces had some green growth, but also looked to be thinning out. Don’t know if it was because of the lack of the sun, or the compacted soil.
In any case, I pulled it up, cut them in smaller pieces then transplanted them into an “off the front sidewalk” area which gets full sun. How bad can grass be before its too late? Can it dry up a bit, get lots of sun, and live??
Maybe I should also take before and after pics…
