Compost and Sand in Bermuda Lawn

I have a new bermuda lawn (installed in March ’03). Both from and rear. Soil is clay. (Atlanta). I have heard about sand to smooth out lumps and bumps. What is the best way to put the sand down? What kind? What rate? Ok to cover sod? Also heard it is a good idea in fall to put down a layer of compost on grass then mow. Any thoughts?

Use enough sand to level your landscape, but don’t use more than 1/3 of an inch per week. Give the grass a chance to grow up through it.
Same with compost. Nor more than 1/3 inch. That is a THIN layer. If you use 1 cubic yard per 1,000 square feet, you will be just right. Then sweep it off the grass blades with a push broom, not a rake. Rakes are hard to use, especially in bermuda, and they pull up the stolens.
