Anyone know anything about centipede grass?I need something that will take the heat without loads of water, and will crowd out the crabgrass. Is it better/worse than bermuda in terms of how fast/far it grows?

Bermuda will spread faster and is more drought tolerant. Centipede is more shade tolerant. Neither will crowd out crab grass. You can eliminate the crab grass by putting down a good pre-emergent this spring.
You might want to consider zoysia. Not knowing where you live I would recommend emerald as it crowds out almost any thing else and survives with low water (note – low water means it turns brown but once established zoysia is very drought tolerant). I don’t know how toro zoysia does but emerald is pretty darn weed and drought resistant (if established). Best of luck.
