can I overseed St. Augustine

I live in the Dallas area. My backyard is very shady. I do not want to cut down any of the native trees. When I moved in the back yard was just dirt. I sodded with St. Augustine – about half was gone in a year. I re-sodded with Delmar St. Augustine and about 1/4 of it is gone now a year later. I have a sprinkler system. Drainage isn’t the best. The areas where we’ve had the most trouble are also areas where water sits after a rain.
My lawn guy has suggested overseeding the entire yard with fescue. Could this work? Is this a good idea? is there a particular seed we should try.
