Burning Bermuda Grass

I live in the metro Atlanta area and I’m curious as to when I should burn my bermuda grass lawn. Should I spot treat any weeds that are currently coming up or should I let them burn with the rest of the thatch that I burn. I’m just trying to get a good ballpark on what is the best date for burning it.

Right now is time to spray round-up on your yard to kill the weeds. The best time to burn your yard is right before it comes out of dormant. This will also let the bermuda come up qicker and greener.

I’m on the south side of Atlanta, and while my bermuda is still dormant, the crabgrass is starting to come alive. I read your advice to someone else about Round Up not killing Bermuda when it’s dormant so I’ve been killing all the weeds as they come up. It’s working quite nicely. Thanks for the tip. 🙂

Vooman, in about amonth you can spray some MSMA to control you crabgrass and also between March 15th and the 25th is the best time to put your pre-emerge down and this will also help.

Shop, also to let you know you can burn your yard right now if you wanted to, but it will look like shit for awhile, but just make sure that it’s in dormant while you burn it. I’m thinking about burning my fairways this year, but having decided yet. If I do I’m going to burn right when they start coming out of dormant that way I won’t get bitch at alot from the members or golfers.

Thanks French, I’m gonna go home and spray the weeds. Once i burn my yard (when it’s almost coming out of dormant), should i cut what’s left low with my reel mower, or just sit and let it come up….secondly should i put down any fertilizer after burning?

You shouldn’t have anything to mow after you burn it. When you do burn your yard, just light it with a lighter and just let the flame do the work. Don’t take a torch and fry it. I did this two years ago and nothing came up that summer. Have you put any pe-emerge down yet? You will be amaze how much greener your yard will be this year by burning it, but don’t over burn it.

Fire safety is my MAJOR concern, plus there are burn laws that vary greatly in different communities. Don’t anyone go out and burn your lawn (and maybe your house and your neighbor’s house) without first contacting the appropriate fire authority in your area.
