Bermuda question

I recently bought a new home that had bermuda grass planted about 1.25 years ago. It has mostly come up, but has many dead spots where the brown bermuda seems (?) to be dead or completely bare. Is it recommended or even a good idea to mix fescue seed with bermuda seed to get a thicker lawn when they both come in and will one take over the other?

That all depends on if you want to mow year round or just in the summer months. By mixing those two grass you will create an unattractive canopy with two different textures; wide and narrow leaf blades. I would recomend one or the other not both. You could purchase more bermuda seed with the money you would have used to purchase the fescue. If you would like winter color, try overseeding your bermuda with ryegrass instead of fescue, It will create less competition for the bermuda as it transitions back into the summer months.

I would say to give your bermuda plenty of water and allow it time to fill in. Last year I bought a house on the south side of Atlanta, Georgia, and without a sprinkler system my lawn was the worst one in town. I installed a sprinkler last fall, and in the past two months the lawn has filled in and is the nicest, greenest lawn in my subdivision. I actually have neighbors stop and chat with me and ask what on earth I’ve done to my yard. 🙂

I cannot beging to tell you the numbers of people who “push” their lawns and ultimately end up with poor results.

Spread some 13-13-13 out,put your sprinkler out,and get your mower ready because it “won’t be nothin’ nice.”

You’ll have to empty your bag every 150 feet.
