Bermuda or St. Augustine?

Our Bahia lawn is just about dead. Time for a new one. We are looking at St. Augustine and Bermuda. We like the look of a St. Augustine from afar. But we don’t like the thick coarse blades. We’re from up north and are used to thin bladed grass. Thath’s why we also like Bermuda and I understand it wears well. Which would be best? Which requires less maintenance? Our back yard is 100% sunlight. The front gets a fair bit of shade.

I am filling bare spots in my yard with Palmetto St. Augustine – not too coarse and a beautiful color. See photo gallery and info at sodsolutions.com.

I lived in North Augusta, South Carolina for 14 years and loved my Bermuda grass. I found it to be higher maintenance than I preferred but it was lovely! During the hot, dry summers, it was necessary to use the sprinkler system on a regular basis. I’ve recently moved to Florida and I, like you, do not like the St. Augustine coarse blades! Good luck to you.

Yes, I am quite certain he has already made his decision and implemented, but for the sake of other readers passing through, I have to agree with Bill … St. Augustine is a rapid growning, stomping resistant, good looking grass that also grows well in the shade.
