we are considering putting sod in our backyard. we have narrowed down our choices to 419 & celebration bermuda’s. please submit your opinions as to which one is better. we live in southeastern, nc and our soil is, you guessed it, sandy. the area gets plenty of sunlight approx 8 hours full, the rest is flitered sun.
prep-work???????? can we just lay the sod over the existing lawn/sand? or do you suggest we round-up the grass (centipede)and weeds then grade it or just grade the existing lawn w/out round-up?

419 on Topsail Beach is great. By all means, prep the base very well; Roundup, till it up a week later and Roundup again. Then in 10 days rake out the junk and spend considerable time getting it as level, or smooth as possible. If you will be mowing at an inch or less it does not take a lot of bumps and swallows to be apparent. Far easier to begin with a uniform base than to have to go back and cut and fill. Also, when you begin to fertilize I’d look for a product that does not have a lot of slow nitrogen; it’s just going to wash right down through the sand anyway. Check out the Lesco in Wilmington, they really are the local experts.
