My St. Augustine in fairly healthy and growing now with small areas that have significantly less growth. I was told to cover these areas with sand or manure to help promote growth. I don’t wan’t to fert. the whole lawn because it had been fed enough and is really green. What do you think about the sand or manure. What about topsoil? By the way I live in Southern California

Top dressing St Augustine with composted manure would probably help in other ways besides the obvious fertilization. Composed manure helps restore the microbial and fungal balance to the soil and helps to curb various diseases, such as take all root rot. I dont see how you can go wrong with your idea, but I would not pile the sand on unless you are just trying to fill in a small, localized, low spot.
