Hello all I live in the inland empire area of southern California. I am taking over maintaining our little league ball fields. I was wondering what grass would be best that gas medium up keep and can be mowed about once a week. Fields are in full sun and we obviously have a budget and can’t spend tons on one item. We have 2 fields that have and infield that is about 3000 sq. Ft. Each and outfields that are 26000 ft any help would help thanks!

For practical purposes (recovery from traffic, drought tolerance, appearance, and maintenance, etc), Bermuda Tifway 419 would probably be one of the best choices.

Regardless of what turfgrass you decide to have, please be careful about your choice of sod provider. Some SoCal sod farms do not test the genetic purity of their grasses and the Tifway 419 that they sell is not the true Tifway 419. These grasses do not look and behave the same as the true Tifway 419. A local golf course is doing a major renovation this year and has reserved a lot of Tifway 419 sods from local farms. You may have to wait until next year if you do decide to go with Tifway 419.

Thanks for the response. When inquiring about this specific bermuda with the local sod farms how do I ensure it is of good quality? What are some of the better farms out here in so cal? If we cant use bermuda then what would be the next best species of grass to use? Once again thanks for your input.
