Dallisgrass/red clover

Anybody got any tips on how to kill dallisgrass.I have st.augustine and live in So,California.I also have a big patch of red clover that just does not want to die>Any advice is appreciated.

Dallis grass can be pulled out pretty easily. It’s not worth trying to find a safe herbicide that works on that but doesn’t kill off your St Aug.

If you set your mower to the highest setting, you should stop the weeds in the future. Actually this is the second line of defense. Deep infrequent watering is the best way to prevent weeds. If you let the surface of the soil dry out completely and not water until the grass folds up, the weed seeds will not be able to sprout. If you water every day, well, that’s what seeds need to sprout. I water for 2 hours in each zone all at one time. Then I don’t water again until the plants fold up, about a week or so later.

If you fertilize regularly, the clover should go away by itself. Usually clover is a symptom of a shortage of nitrogen.
