Killing off weeds/Liriope before putting down Zoysia Sod

My husband and I are going to be killing off what is left of our backyard, mostly weeds and liriope and ivy before putting down zoysia sod. What is the best product to use? When he went looking at Home Depot they told him to be careful about what he chose because some products last 12 months and it would kill our new sod. Also, how long should we wait given the proper product used before we till and grade and lay the new sod?

You could try Roundup. Roundup is a contact pesticide and will not have a residual. If you sprayed on Monday you could till by Thursday, grade Friday, and Sod Saturday.
The only problem I see is Roundup some times takes two-three applications to fully kill everything. But if you round up once, and till 6-12″ you shouldnt have a problem.

I had some real problems trying to kill off some liriope with roundup. I think it’s at least a couple month process. If you don’t make sure it’s dead before laying the sod, it will poke its way back through and be a real nuisance.
